As tourism is seasonal, there are infrastructures for accommodation, water, transport, leisure etc, that are not used for a good part of the year. According to a study, hostels in France are only used for half a year and secondary residences only during one eight of the year. Even if tourist accommodation was used all year long, then only a tenth of the accommodation currently available would be substantial.

It is estimated that in Spain alone, there are 3.6 million secondary residences, half of which belong to foreigners
[1]. In Italy, there are 4 million. In Mallorca and Corsica, secondary residencies represent 30% of the total amount of houses. The three French regions on the Mediterranean coast, host 30% of the country�s total amount of secondary residencies.
