As tourism is seasonal, there are infrastructures for accommodation, water,
transport, leisure etc, that are not used for a good part of the year.
According to a study, hostels in France are only used for half a
year and secondary residences only during one eight of the year. Even if
tourist accommodation was used all year long, then only a tenth of the
accommodation currently available would be substantial.
It is estimated that in Spain
alone, there are 3.6 million secondary residences, half of which belong to
foreigners. In Italy,
there are 4 million. In Mallorca and Corsica, secondary residencies represent 30% of the total amount of houses. The three
French regions on the Mediterranean coast, host 30% of the countrys total amount
of secondary residencies.
